Rest in Peace Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson, the most iconic poker player in the history of the game passed away on May 14^th, 2023, at 89 years old. He was one of the major influences on me when starting out in poker. This article is dedicated to Doyle. I will share some facts about him that some of our less experienced poker players may not have known.

The World Series of Poker

Doyle Brunson was one of the most influential poker players of all time. Dolly won ten World Series of Poker bracelets. He’s tied with Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey for second all time, behind Phil Hellmuth’s sixteen bracelets. He is also one of only four players to have won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker multiple times, which he did in 1976 and 1977. Doyle was one of only three players, along with Bill Boyd and Loren Klein, to have won WSOP tournaments in four consecutive years. In addition, he is the first of six players to win both the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title. As a sign of respect, whenever Doyle busts the main event, everyone gave him a standing ovation.

The Author

Brunson was also a prolific author, writing several books on poker, including Super System. This was probably the most significant poker strategy books ever written. The book revolutionized how players perceived poker after with a greater emphasis on aggression than before.  He was also a co-founder of the Texas Dolly’s Poker Room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Brunson’s contributions to the poker world were immense. He helped to popularize the game and make it more accessible to a wider audience. He also helped to raise the level of play by developing and sharing his poker strategy. Brunson’s legacy will continue to inspire poker players for generations to come.

The Christian and Family Man

In addition to his poker accomplishments, Brunson was also a devout Christian and a family man. As a Christian myself, it’s fantastic to see such a leading figure in poker also follow Jesus. He was married to Louise Brunson for over 50 years, and they had three children together. Brunson was a role model for many people and his life was an inspiration to all who knew him.
